Westenergy has officially signed the Antwerp Declaration for a European Industrial Deal.

The parties entered into an agreement for the joint development, construction and operation of a carbon capture unit in the municipality of Mustasaari, Finland. The unit will capture CO2 from the flue gas generated by the existing Westenergy plant. The captured CO2 will be liquefied, and a large fraction will be transported to Kristinestad where it will be utilised at Prime Capital´s and CPC´s power-to-x site. The carbon capture operations will be managed by Westenergy. The total value of the investment is approximately EUR 138 million and the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment has granted a total of EUR 20 million of energy investment aid for the project.

Service stop started at Westenergy's waste-to-energy plant on Saturday the 15th of April when the plant was shut down. All the maintenance and repair work and inspections that cannot be carried out when the plant is in operation, are carried out during the service stop.

Westenergy and Ekorosk have signed a contract that makes Ekorosk one of Westenergy's owner companies. The contract further expands Westenergy's operation area, and now Westenergy's operation area covers over 20 percent of the municipalities in Finland. Annually, approximately 200 000 tonnes of waste is refined into electricity, heat and renewable materials in Westenergy's Waste-to-Energy plant.

Westenergy launched a set of research projects in 2019, aiming to explore new business opportunities for waste-to-energy plants and solutions to development challenges in the waste-to-energy sector in accordance with company’s strategy. The carbon-neutral energy production project aims to study how a waste-to-energy plant could work as a carbon sink and how the different carbon capture systems fit together with the existing process.
