Westenergy refines waste into district heat, electricity and recovered materials.
ISO/IEC 27001 is the world’s most well‑known and respected information security standard. It defines the requirements for an information security management system and ensures that an organisation protects its information comprehensively — from personal and customer data to system reliability and operational resilience.
With this certification, Westenergy demonstrates to its stakeholders that information security is an integral part of the organisation’s daily operations and decision‑making. Data, systems and services are protected with appropriate technical and organisational measures, and the associated risk management is systematic, proactive and continuously improving. The certification confirms that Westenergy maintains a high level of operational continuity and service reliability, even in exceptional circumstances.
“The ISO/IEC 27001 certification further reinforces our commitment to responsible and secure operations. Information security is a key element of the operating environment of a modern waste‑to‑energy plant, and the certificate demonstrates to our stakeholders that we take this responsibility seriously,” says Olli Alhoniemi, CEO of Westenergy.
Goal-oriented mindset and continuous development have long been key priorities at Westenergy. Our company already holds the ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 certificates, granted in 2015. The ISO/IEC 27001 certification is therefore a natural continuation of Westenergy’s long‑term development efforts. Westenergy’s management system now integrates quality, environmental, occupational health and safety, and information and cybersecurity systems into one functional system.
The ISO 27001 certification was preceded by an extensive internal development project, during which the organisation’s practices, processes and technical solutions were reviewed and updated to meet international requirements. The project was carried out under the leadership of Westenergy’s IT Manager, Niklas Serén, particularly from the perspective of protecting data, systems and services.
“The ISO/IEC 27001 project expanded significantly compared to the original estimate, but this is precisely what made the outcome stronger. Information security is now truly part of everyday operations and continuous activity – not a separate IT project,” says IT Manager Niklas Serén.

The certificate was granted by the independent certification body Kiwa Sertifiointi Oy, whose lead auditor Marko Jokipii praises Westenergy’s readiness for the certification process:
“From our perspective, the ISO/IEC 27001 certification process carried out together with Westenergy was smooth and well‑prepared. The cooperation was seamless, and the organisation’s determined work was clearly visible throughout the progression of the process.”
Overall, the project strengthens Westenergy’s position as a reliable and secure partner in the fields of energy production, waste management and the circular economy.
