Westenergy

Westenergy refines waste into district heat, electricity and recovered materials.

The change of local detailed plan for the Westenergy area is an important part of the preliminary planning for the carbon capture project

On August 13, 2024, the Municipal Council of Korsholm approved the change of local detailed plan for the Westenergy area, allowing activities related to carbon capture and utilization to be located on the Westenergy site.

The approval of the local detailed plan is a significant milestone in the development, construction, and operation of the joint carbon capture project by Westenergy Oy, CPC Finland Oy and Prime Capital AG.

The facility is intended to capture carbon dioxide from the flue gases of Westenergy’s existing plant. The captured carbon dioxide will be liquefied, with a significant portion being transported to Kristinestad, where it will be utilized in Prime Capital and CPC’s power-to-x facility to produce synthetic fuel. Additionally, Westenergy will use the carbon dioxide in the production of products that permanently sequester carbon, further promoting the emergence of a new carbon recycling-based industry in the Vaasa region.

Overall, the change in local detailed plan opens opportunities for a future where increasingly refined products can be produced from carbon dioxide.
